When Christians talk about God intervening in the details of their lives, that idea is seldom taken more than skin deep. If God is controlling all events, or just certain events, one must take the consequences of those actions to their logical conclusion.
The events of 9/11/2001 demonstrate the absurdity of thinking God is controlling the events in our lives. Why did some live and some die simply because of trivial decisions made on that day?
God would have to orchestrate the tiniest details and work out all of the events of anyone and everything connected to an action that is attributed to Him. He would also have to make people make decisions, which would mean that we have no free will.
If this is the case, atheists are correct in saying our God is cruel and uncaring. But the scripture answers this whole matter in the book of Ecclesiastes.
